Beta adrenergic influence on oesophageal peristalsis in man.
The effects of the beta-1 adrenergic agonist prenalterol and the beta-2 adrenergic agonist terbutaline on oesophageal peristalsis were studied in nine healthy volunteers with pressures recorded in the proximal, middle, and distal oesophagus. Two doses of the agonists were given after pretreatment with placebo, propranolol, or metoprolol in a double blind randomised fashion. Terbutaline 0.25 +/-...
متن کاملEffect of dystonic movements on oesophageal peristalsis in Sandifer's syndrome.
A 5 year old girl with gross gastrooesophageal reflux had pronounced dystonic neck movements that resolved after fundoplication and resolution of the oesophagitis (Sandifer's syndrome). Oesophageal manometry before operation showed that peristalsis improved when she tilted her head to one side. Dystonic posturing may promote acid clearance from the distal oesophagus.
متن کاملRegulation of alpha and beta adrenergic receptors in man.
The sympathetic nervous system is an important regulator of the functional activities of organs such as the heart and peripheral vasculature, and also plays a vital role in modulating responses to stress. The ultimate effects of sympathetic stimulation are mediated by release of noradrenaline (norepinephrine) from nerve terminals which serves to activate the adrenergic receptors at post-synapti...
متن کاملStimulation and characteristics of secondary oesophageal peristalsis in normal subjects.
The study evaluates the triggering and characteristics of secondary oesophageal peristalsis in 25 healthy volunteers. Secondary peristalsis was stimulated by rapid intraoesophageal injection of boluses of air and water, and by a five second oesophageal distension with a balloon. Air and water boluses triggered secondary peristalsis that started in the proximal oesophagus regardless of injection...
متن کاملAnomalies of peristalsis in idiopathic diffuse oesophageal spasm.
Oesophageal manometry revealed 'interrupted peristalsis'--proximal sequential contraction with simultaneous pressure increases in the mid-oesophagus and sequential contraction distally--and abnormally slow distal propagation of peristalsis in seven of a consecutive series of 12 patients with idiopathic diffuse oesophageal spasm (IDOS). These two abnormalities occurred together in six patients. ...
